EPR stands for Extended Producers Responsibility. EPR Authorization is mandatory for all Producers, Importers, Brand Owners & Manufacturers of Electronics, Plastic Packaging & Batteries in India.

EPR certificate is issued by the Central Pollution Control Board.

The reason for procuring this EPR certificate is to channelize the waste properly and compensate for the waste caused by their products in the market. The idea is to promote sustainable development which in return helps to keep waste generation of the country in check.

Electronic Waste Management 

Extended Producer Responsibility (Ewaste EPR) Is applicable on all the Producers of Electronics into the country including Manufacturers, Importers, Dealers, E-Retailers & Bulk consumers to channelize the proper disposal of E-Waste and to prevent their hazardous effects on the environment and living beings.

Through EPR registration the Producer has been given an extra Responsibility to manage and take care of the lifecycle of the electronics. The electronic waste after its Expiry needs to be properly disposed of, transported, stored, dismantled, segregated and recycled through the means of an Authorized E waste Recyclers

Plastic Waste Management 

The Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, mandate the generators of plastic waste take steps to minimize the generation of plastic waste, not to litter the plastic waste, ensure segregated storage of waste at the source, and hand over segregated waste in accordance with rules. The Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 cast Extended Producer Responsibility on Producer, Importer, and Brand Owner. Extended Producer Responsibility shall be applicable to both pre-consumer and post-consumer plastic packaging waste.

The following entities are covered under the same

  • Producer (P) means a person engaged in manufacturing or import of carry bags, multi-layered packaging, Plastic Sheet, or like, and includes industries or individuals using plastic sheets or like or covers made of plastic sheets or multi-layered packaging for packaging or wrapping the commodities.
  • Importer (I) means a person who imports plastic packaging products or products with plastic packaging or carry bags or multi-layered packaging or plastic sheets or like.
  • Brand Owners (BO) means a person or company who sells any commodities under a registered brand, label or trademark.

Battery Waste Management – EPR Certificate

The Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001 were replaced by the most recent Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, which went into effect in August 2022. Any Producer, Manufacturer, Dealer, other Entity, or Consumer who participates in the collection, transportation, segregation, or any other process related to the management of Waste Battery is subject to these regulations. In addition, these rules apply to all batteries, including automotive batteries, electric vehicle batteries, industrial batteries, and portable batteries, regardless of their chemistry, volume, material composition, shape, weight, or use. These new rules also include a number of provisions relating to definitions, new roles, and authorization procedures.

Types Batteries Regulated Under Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022

  • Automotive batteries means any Battery used only for automotive starter, lighting or ignition power. They are also known as car batteries.
  • Electric Vehicle battery means any Battery specifically designed to provide traction to hybrid and electric vehicles for road transport. Use lithium-ion batteries used in E-Scooters, E-bike, and E-car etc.
  • Industrial batteries means any Battery designed for industrial uses, excluding Portable battery, Electric vehicle battery and automotive battery. These may include sealed Battery (excluding potable battery); unsealed Battery (excluding automotive Battery) and energy storage system Battery
  • Portable Batteries means Battery that is sealed, less than five kilograms, not made for industrial purposes, electric vehicle or to be used as an Automotive Battery.
